NANDANA SEN BIOGRAPHY








Nandana Sen was born on August 19, 1967 in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. She attended Harvard University where she studied literature and was awarded the Detur Prize in her freshman year for topping her class.Nandana Sen is the coveted actress of the ritzy world of Bollywood. Sen not only works in Hindi cinema but also enacts in English, Italian and Bengali movies. 



The gorgeous lady always flutters spreading wings of success in the sky of fame.Nandana Sen is an Indian actress, screenwriter, children's author and child-rights activist. Her first vehicle in Bollywood was the Rani Mukherjee and Amitabh Bachchan starrer Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black (2005) in which she played the role of Rani’s 17-year-old younger sister. 



Sen gave a highly proclaimed performance in the role and the film was applauded by both audience and critics, earning her a nomination for Breakthrough Performance of the Year. Time Magazine (Europe) selected the film as one of the 10 Best Movies of the Year 2005 from across the globe.Born in Kolkata, India, Nandana is from the Bengali Hindu family and the daughter of the famed Nobel Laureate and Bharat Ratna economist Amartya Sen and Nabanita Dev Sen, who is the Padma Shri winner who is the highly renowned author in the contemporary Bengali literature. 



She went on to train at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in New York and at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. While still a student, she made her film debut with the 1997 film Gudia.Nandana Sen studied literature at Harvard University, where she was awarded the Detur Prize in her first year for topping her class, and thereafter every year she also won both the John Harvard Scholarship and the Elizabeth Cary Agassiz Award for Academic Achievement of the Highest Distinction.



 As a Junior, she was elected early into the academic honor society Phi Beta Kappa. Subsequently, Sen studied Film Producing at the Peter Stark Producing Program at the USC Film School. She wrote and directed various short films, including her thesis film "Arranged Marriage" which was shown at multiple film festivals. As an actor, Nandana trained at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, New York, as well as the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London.

She has since starred in such features as Strangers, Marigold, Sharpe’s Peril, Rang Rasiya, The Forest and Perfect Mismatch, among others. The ravishingly sizzling Nandana Sen stepped into the filmdom by making her debut with the flick, ‘The Doll’. 



Her first debut vehicle in Bollywood was the Rani Mukherjee and Amitabh Bachchan starrer Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black in which she essayed the role of a 17-year-old sister of Rani. Her character was applauded by the viewers and the critics. Later she did other Bollywood films doing leading roles – ‘Tango Charlie’ and ‘My Wife’s Murder’.



The movie, ‘My Wife’s Murder’ offered her the opportunity to work with Anil Kapoor, Boman Irani and Suchitra Krishnamurthy. Both of these movies did well with the audiences.Sen has starred in over 20 feature films from multiple countries and in various languages (see Filmography).



 Her portrayal of Sugandha in her latest release Rang Rasiya (2014) has been hailed by critics as "pitch-perfect," "superb,".  "divine, elegant, and enticing,". "innocent and vulnerable,", "fearless, uninhibited," "radiant in every frame", "poignant, lustrous", "stunning" and "as refined as it is bold".



 Sen’s pathbreaking performance  as artist Ravi Varma’s muse in this historical romance on the religious censorship of art), subsequently won her the prestigious Kalakar Award for Best Actress in 2015: in her acceptance speech, Nandana went on record saying that the award honours "the greater cause of free speech and expression, now under enormous threat everywhere, as shown by the horrifying Charlie Hebdo killings in Paris. 



The need to protect our creative freedom – whether we are actors or journalists, film-makers or novelists – is more urgent now than ever."In Tango Charlie, Sen showed off her nude back that fetched huge controversies and the flick ‘Rang Rasiya’ in which she essayed the role of a painter’s muse, she went nude. 



This fueled endless controversies and these days the protests again emerged when Rang Rasiya was screened at 17th Kolkata Film Festival.  But she says that she does not care about these controversies, as she is proud of what she played in Rang Rasiya.
